What makes NBUSA different?

In a word, it’s the networking. NBUSA participants frequently tell us how amazed they are that a group of people who barely know each other can come together as a community and learn from one another in order to spark the next wave of innovation. These experiences really do help us discover, explore and deepen relationships—with others, ourselves and the natural world to shatter barriers seen and unseen.

There are no other programs like ours in the world. Both on the internet and at our Summit and University programs, people from all backgrounds unite to help one another shatter barriers.

As one participant said, “No Barriers is a life-affirming experience that changes so many people's lives as all they see how assistive technologies are changing the ways that disabled people live, work and play. Whether you were a participant, family, friend, volunteer, scientist or participating sponsor you left inspired and energized to do more for yourself and others.”

Who can participate at a NBUSA Summit or University program?

We seek to include people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities. The bulk of participants are paraplegics, amputees, blind people and those with traumatic brain injuries many of whom are injured veterans - but the audience goes beyond more traditional disabilities to include those who feel they are too old, too heavy or too disadvantaged in any way. We believe the message of No Barriers is universal.

  • Professionals Include:
    • Scientists, Inventors, Athletes, Researchers, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Speech Therapists, Manufacturers, Social Service Professionals, Artists and others.
  • Individuals with Challenges include everyone, including:
    • Amputees, Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injuries, Multiple Sclerosis, Sensory Impairments, Cerebral Palsy, Visual Impairments, Autism, Developmentally Delayed, Behavioral Disabilities, Learning Disabilities, Challenged due to Weight, Challenged due to Age, Economically Challenged, Veterans and others.

Do you offer financial aid to attend the Summit?

Yes. We believe the opportunity to enjoy the Summit should be available to everyone. To keep our programs as financially accessible as possible, each year we raise funds from alumni and others. Financial assistance is need-based. Certain restrictions apply. Financial aid information is available with Summit registration forms.

How physically demanding are NBUSA Summits?

The Summits are for YOU! Participation is encouraged at every level but we understand the need to go at our own pace. Each Summit includes people with a wide range of ability levels. We work to ensure that the overall program design allows for light and vigorous activities to appeal to everyone’s thirst for adventure based on their abilities. There also are often opportunities for breaks and time to explore the towns on your own.

What are the qualifications of the NBUSA Adventure Clinic Leaders?

All of the clinic leaders are experienced in leading their specific clinic. NBUSA partners with some of the best nonprofits and companies in the world to provide fun, quality clinics. Every Adventure clinic leader’s and staff come from all over the world, bringing with them a wealth of experience, knowledge and commitment--several have been leading clinics at Summits for years. Regardless of which clinic you participate in, you will love the clinic leaders and staff--they are the one of best thing about NBUSA Summits.
