No Barriers USA is Proud to Unveil the First Installment of its Online Educational Video Series
After months of work to get the footage from Festival 2009 into videos that can benefit everyone all year long, the first installment of the online Educational Resource Center is here!
Our No Barriers festivals are hugely successful; however, participants are always seeking information post-event on what they saw, heard about, or tried during the event. They are also interested in new developments of technologies since the last festival. Based on this high demand, No Barriers has launched its first installment of educational videos and resources on our website. How does this benefit you?
- You will be able to learn about techniques and devices for a variety of quality of life activities and how they can be applied to various disabilities.
- Several service organizations are listed to help you overcome barriers.
- You can connect with developers, manufacturers and inventors.
Over the coming months, NBUSA will be adding more videos and resource guides to expand the Educational Resource Center. Additional videos will be coming soon, including: handcycling, therapeutic riding, sailing, swimming with the dolphins, robots for mobility devices, fishing techniques and adaptive devices, technologies being developed for the visually impaired including more on the Brainport device, and much more.
Eventually, educational lessons will also be added to the videos so educators will be able to utilize the videos in an instructive environment. Instructors will be provided a step by step process to teach inclusion, motivation, science and technology, and more. Therapists will also be able to use our resources to help patients realize the possibilities; as well as learn about devices and technologies that may aid them in their practice.
It is so exciting to finally have the first few videos on the website. Every day I receive phone calls and emails from people looking for more information on finding adaptive equipment, devices or organizations in their areas that can allow them to be more active in their lives. The Educational Resource Center would have not been possible without the amazing partnerships of Shake-A-Leg Miami, The Knight Foundation, Serac Adventure Films, and clinic leaders and presenters from Festival 2009. It is a terrific addition to No Barriers' services.
We encourage you to share these videos, use them in your profession, and maybe even add an adaptive recreation program in your agency based on what you learn. Here are a couple of the videos you can find online at the No Barriers USA website today:
The opportunity to sail frees blind persons from the daily limitations on their mobility. At the helm, a blind person experiences the freedom to choose and control their own course. This is a precious freedom and empowerment the sighted world takes for granted.
"Vision Substitution in the Blind by Means of Tactile Stimulation of the Tongue"
A presentation on the Brainport device that someday may allow blind people to see again.
One of the fastest growing sporting activities over the past 15 years is rock climbing. The activity has an advantage of allowing individuals to climb based on comfort level thanks to indoor climbing walls and a variety of programs that accommodate all ages and all abilities, including wheelchair users and arm amputees.
