Clinton Global Initiative of the University of Miami to benefit No Barriers Festival 2009
at Shake-A-Leg Miami
After attending thousands of meetings during his career in which urgent needs were discussed but no action was taken to implement solutions, President Clinton saw a need to establish a new kind of meeting with an emphasis on results. The Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) was the outcome. CGI reflects his belief that governments need collaboration from the private sector, non-governmental agencies, and other global leaders to effectively confront the world's most pressing problems and deliver results.
Building on the successful model of the CGI, and seeing the need to involve future leaders in the leadership process, President Clinton launched the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) in 2007 to engage the next generation of leaders on college campuses around the world. The University of Miami embraced the initiative.
The University of Miami recently partnered with Shake-A-Leg Miami and No Barriers USA through the CGI U program and committed an unprecedented level of support and service for the 2009 Festival. Several University departments, faculty, administrators and students will be involved in providing such things as interns for various aspects of the event, advanced operational preparations, general "day-of" needs, festival transportation, audio/visual and media productions, volunteers, and housing for participants.
Additionally, Commitments to Action, a unique feature of CGI U membership, which translates practical goals into meaningful and measurable results, will be incorporated. Commitments are new, specific, and measurable initiatives that address social or environmental challenges on campuses, in communities, or in different parts of the world. Varying in scope and duration, many commitments are the result of new and diverse partnerships between students, universities, nonprofits, and national youth organizations, with members combining efforts to expand the impact of new ideas.
"This is a very exciting partnership that will result in a model that can be used for future No Barriers Festivals, as well as for other collaborations between Universities and their communities nationwide," says Erik Weihenmayer, Board President of No Barriers USA. "We hope our model also effectively serves as a catalyst to change and innovation in the actions of future leaders."
