Almost every blind person I meet over the age of 40 is in poor physical condition due to inactivity. No Barriers is waking these folks up to the possibilities that exist for good safe healthy fun.

No Barriers / Dolomiti 2004

The idea for NO BARRIERS/DOLOMITI originated with four American friends: Jim Goldsmith, Wayne Hanson, Paolo Pompanin and Mark Wellman.

Their concept was for NO BARRIERS/DOLOMITI to offer an opportunity for all to share, learn and expand their knowledge about the many diverse aspects of disabled participation in active life.

In addition, NO BARRIERS/DOLOMITI 2004 was conceived as a forum to promote sports and outdoor activities for disabled persons. Particular attention was given to the mountain environment, its services and infrastructures.

The event featured the Symposium “Sharing Experiences,” an opportunity for associations and professionals who work with the many aspects of diversity and disability and the disabled to learn and share ideas and experiences.

There were a number of sport demonstrations performed by world-famous disabled athletes:

  • The archery demonstration by Paralympic champion Oscar de Pellegrin.
  • The sledge-hockey match with the Italian team which will compete in the Turin 2006 Paralympics.
  • The climb of one of the most classic routes on the Cinque Torri, via Armida on Torre Grande, by Hugh Herr, Erik Weihenmayer and Mark Wellman.
  • Torball match with the A.S.DI.VE team and Erik Weihenmayer, Mark Wellman and Hugh Herr.

NO BARRIERS/DOLOMITI 2004 was a highly inspirational event for the participants, and stimulated extensive media coverage.
