Students Who Are Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and Typically Hearing (ages 14 – 21)

This unique and exciting opportunity is open to students who are deaf, hard of hearing, and typically hearing from across the U.S.  Two American Sign Language interpreters will accompany the group, so students who use communication modes from ASL, to listening and spoken language will all be able to communicate with one another and build a strong group bond throughout the program.

Program highlights:

  • Form meaningful relationships with Deaf, Hard of Hearing, and typically hearing peers from across the U.S
  • Participate in meaningful service projects and cross-cultural exchange activities with Peruvian deaf students.
  • Visit Machu Picchu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and experience the diversity and richness of this beautiful region through a variety of eco-tourism activities
  • Challenge yourself to examine leadership strengths and weaknesses, and craft your own personal vision for living a No Barriers Life!

We encourage students to fundraise for this phenomenal travel experience and we can support you with fundraising ideas, a handbook, and an online crowdfunding page where you can solicit donations from family members, friends, and the general public.

This expedition involves rigorous hiking. The program includes a challenging multi-day trek at high altitude. While Leading the Way is about challenging yourself, it is important that you feel you are physically capable of these demands before applying.

Dates: July 16-26, 2017

Location: Lima, Peru and Cusco, Peru

Ages: 14 – 22

Cost:  $4795 + travel to Miami, FL. This program fee INCLUDES round trip airfare from Miami, FL to Lima, Peru and in-country round trip airfare from Lima to Cusco, Peru. Participants should anticipate paying or fundraising for: Roundtrip airfare from the student’s home city to Miami, FL, other associated travel costs (e.g. bag fees, minor traveling alone fees, etc.), meals while traveling to and from Peru and personal gear items, and souvenirs.

ELIGIBILITY & ACCEPTANCE CRITERIA:

  • Age 14-21 at time of trip, required
  • Ideal participants demonstrate leadership skills and potential, academic merit, an interest in pursuing education outside of the classroom, and an interest in the natural world. No prior outdoor experience is required.
  • Participants must be able to complete a rigorous, multi-day trek at high altitude.
  • Merit is evaluated via GPA and short essays addressing: leadership potential anddesire to grow.

GROUP MAKE-UP

This program will be comprised of 10-20 students who are deaf, hard of hearing, and typically hearing from around the country who apply and are selected to participate.

Phase 1: Thoughtful Preparation

  • Participate in 3-5 preparatory conference calls in the spring of 2017 to help prepare for the expedition. Each conference call will have 1-2 hours of necessary homework to be completed in advance.

Phase 2:  Expedition in Peru July 16-26, 2017

Phase 3: Meaningful Returns

  • Make a “No Barriers Pledge” incorporating what you learned into meaningful action in your daily life.
  • If receiving a scholarship, we ask you to submit a “letter of impact” describing how the program impacted you to be shared with program sponsors.
