2018 Summit Activities

Elective Activities occur on Friday, October 5th on board the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. Our activities are designed to be appropriate to a wide variety of participants, hosted by organizations who specialize in making activities adaptive and accessible. The goal of these experiences is to try new things and to move outside of your comfort zone in a supportive and encouraging environment.

Reclaim Your Narrative: Writing Workshop with Sound Board NYC

Activity Provider:
Sound Board NYC

 

Join poet, singer, rapper and Sound Board NYC founder Raegan Sealy for a writing workout like no other. Stretch your creative muscles, whip your rhymes into shape and get those metaphors running laps in this 90-minute poetry session centered on finding your vision and connection through personal expression.

Your creativity will expand even further with the sounds of strings as you are accompanied by a member of Raegan’s band to provide extra inspiration to your piece.

Textiles, Sewing and Fashion Design for Accessibility

Activity Providers: Mitsy Kit, Two Blind Brothers, & Open Style Lab

 

Tammy Roussell of Mitsy Kit, in conjunction with Two Blind Brothers (#AsSeenOnEllen) and Grace Jun of Open Style Lab (Parsons School of Design), are uniting for a unique sensory experience.

Bradford & Bryan Manning will share anecdotes of the textile and fashion entrepreneurial culture and how they’ve perfected a space where fashion meets comfort. Leading you through a tactile guided process (cue the blindfolds!), Tammy Roussell will demonstrate and help attendees complete and take home a project that utilizes a technique she’s pioneered – the first ever patented tactile sewing system. As innovations are ever evolving, as is design; Grace Jun will share how universal design and technology have merged in fashion at Open Style Lab.

The Broadway Insider Experience!

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to perform on Broadway? Join NYC’s own ThisAbility as they lead you through the audition process, give you insider, behind-the-scenes secrets, and share stories from the stage.

You will learn a part from a Broadway show and experience the ‘audition’ process, just like the Broadway stars do! The Broadway Insider Experience culminates with an inside scoop of the happenings in castings, rehearsal, and the Broadway Stage.

Our Broadway Guest Artists will leave you with stories from the business you will never forget!

DayGLOW Music’s World Music Program: Sounds of Puerto Rico

Activity Provider:
DayGLOW Music

 

Join DayGLOW’s founder and percussionist for the Zac Brown Band, Danny de los Reyes, for an unmatchable rhythm experience. As a group you will incorporate percussion instruments, rhythms from around the world, dance and vocals to build respect and appreciation for one another. Through group participation and teamwork, participants will nurture harmony and creativity.

Feel the Music with Mandy Harvey

Learn to feel the music with Mandy Harvey, America’s Got Talent finalist, award winning singer, songwriter, and motivational speaker to experience music in a new way. You will use Mandy’s innovative method of incorporating vibration to feel the music and learn to rely on all senses to create harmony.

Just Improvise

Activity Provider:
Deadbeats & Hustlers

 

The thought of participating in Improvisational Comedy might make you slightly nervous … which is exactly why you should reach out of your comfort zone with New York City comedians Jen and Dina of MomCave (@MomCaveTV) and local Improv troupe Deadbeats & Hustlers. Dust off your quick wit and have these masterful instructors lead you through various exercises and games that will introduce you to this exciting art form and build class community, all infused with a No Barriers spirit!

Photography Untouched

Activity Provider:

Have you ever wondered how photographers make their photos look so beautiful, or how a photo can provoke so many emotions? Learn the basics of photography from New York City professional photographers Lauren Kallen (@laurenkallen) and Sam Horine (@SamHorine).

Get behind the scenes tricks and tips to taking your photos to the next level. You will be provided a camera, and team up with another session participant to work together in teams of two. You and your partner will learn to create images of your own while adventuring together as a group aboard the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s pier.

Have you ever wanted to know how to decorate cupcakes and cakes like a pro? Join Melissa Ben-Ishay, founder of NYC’s famous bite-size cupcake and treats company, Baked by Melissa. Melissa will lead you through an interactive activity session by showing some of her tricks of the trade. Another reason not to miss this session – Melissa will be providing a sampling of her delicious cupcakes to enjoy!

Dancing for All: No BS

Do you have a body? Then this class is for you! Join Whitney Way Thore, star of TLC’s My Big Fat Fabulous Life, as she leads you through an upbeat dance class for ANY-body! Whitney founded No Body Shame in 2014, a global movement designed to help people of every variety live their lives fully, passionately, and free of shame. Dance without shame, work through your personal summits, and enjoy everything that your body can accomplish.

Street Art and Community Mural

Activity Provider: Jill Folino and Wven Villegas of Mano-a-Mano

 

Graffiti and street art have been around for decades and spans all corners of the globe. NYC local artist duo and annual Bonnaroo contributors, Jill Folino and Wven Villegas (@artofmano), will discuss some of the history and culture of street art in NYC, as well as lead a hands-on demonstration where you can try street art techniques for yourself! You will end the session on the Intrepid’s pier contributing to the community Summit mural for all participants to see!

Turning Fear into Power: Self-Defense

Activity Provider:
Model Mugging

 

For many, fear is a barrier for finding freedom, happiness or achieving goals. The Model Mugging program will teach you how to work with the barrier of fear and transform it into an empowering emotion to prevent and defend yourself from danger. Taught with joy and laughter, this self defense workshop will empower you to tap into your warrior spirit and gain self defense skills that you will carry for life. Through teaching techniques such as boundary setting skills, conflict avoidance and awareness, you will learn to become your own heroine or hero.

How to be a Jedi

Activity Provider: Human Instruments

 

“Try not. Do or do not. There is no try.” – Master Yoda, The Empire Strikes Back. How to be a Jedi is a workshop that will lead you on a journey through the principles and practices of becoming a Jedi Knight. This New York City based workshop examines knowledge from Star Wars’ greatest heroes, and applies these teachings to the challenges of your everyday life. How do you overcome your own Summit – your personal, mental and physical barriers? How do you manage fear, anger, aggression (“the dark side of the force”) and cultivate wisdom, peace, and harmony for yourself and all people on Earth? These questions will be answered through an interactive presentation, guided meditation, and large group activities that teach you to “use the force.”

Wellness Makeover

Activity Provider: Heather Thomson

 

Attendees of the No Barriers Summit NYC will get an exclusive wellness makeover with NYC’s own Heather Thomson. You will hear Heather’s pillars of health and learn how you can apply them to your everyday life – how to feed, move, rest and relax your body so you can live a healthy and fulfilling life. Heather will share stories from her personal journey and the techniques she’s incorporated for breaking down barriers that arise with wellness lifestyle changes. You’ll leave with the tools and knowledge to refresh your body.

No Barriers Life Panel

Innovation is happening daily – from tools and gadgets that simplify tasks to creative and new ways to do old things. This panel will focus on the innovations that make barriers a thing of the past. Join innovators who are creating outstanding technology and creating new ways of doing things to simplify lives each and every day.

Panelists will include NYC’s own Dr. Ann Spungen, a doctor who is an integral part of the Spinal Cord Damage Research Center at Mt. Sinai, and creator of the exoskeleton; Jen Owen, co-creator of the first 3D printed mechanical hand, which was released as an open source technology so all who need the technology can use it; and Michael Lomonaco, world-renowned chef, founder of some of NYC’s most iconic kitchens, and TV personality.

This panel will be moderated by NYC’s Mike Muse, co-founder and CEO of Muse Recordings, who is a frequent commentator, and lecturer for multiple news and radio outlets. This panel will also include live demonstrations of these incredible innovations!

Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum Guided Touch Tour

Join an Intrepid Museum staff member for an up close tour of the Museum’s aircraft collection and artifacts. Guided touch of designated aircraft, artifacts, tactile images and models will demonstrate the difference between how airplanes and helicopters are designed to fly.

Reach for the Top: Rock Climbing and Bouldering

Activity Providers: Mark Wellman & Brooklyn Boulders

 

Join two titans of the industry, Mark Wellman and New York’s own Brooklyn Boulders, as you reach for success with the New York skyline and the Hudson River as your backdrop. With access to an on-site climbing wall and bouldering wall, your barriers will have no place to hide.

Breaking Barriers Through Boxing

Activity Providers: B-Bold & Wheeling Forward

 

Join B-Bold and New York based Wheeling Forward for a perfect blend of skill development, fun and exercise. This great duo of providers will lead you through boxing and self-defense activities that will have you knocking down barriers in no time.

Cycle Like An Olympian

 

 

 

Activity Providers: Burke Hospital / InTandem / NYC Parks & Rec / Helen Hayes Hospital

Get introduced to the expansive world of adaptive cycling with Paralympian, Billy Lister! You will learn about the wide variety of adaptive cycles, how to find the right cycle for you, and learn to ride in a fun and safe environment. Whether you are new to cycling or are a regular weekend road warrior, join in and explore the world of adaptive cycling with your fellow members of the No Barriers Summit Class of 2018 and be amazed at what you are capable of! Bicycles and instruction will be provided by the amazing team of: New York’s Burke Hospital and Helen Hayes Hospital, New York City’s Parks & Rec and New York City’s InTandem.

Wheelchair Basketball

Activity Provider:
New York City Department of Parks & Recreation

 

New York City Department of Parks & Recreation Description: Roll your way onto the basketball court for a fun combination of skill development and scrimmaging with New York City’s own Rollin’ Knicks star Ali Faizool. Bring your own wheelchair, or use one of ours as the Rollin’ Knicks show you techniques, and join you in a game or two. This activity will be located at DeWitt Clinton Park – about a 15 minute walk from the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

Fencing – En Garde!

Wheeling Forward

 

Fencing is an amazing sport that promotes both physical and mental dexterity. Learn the fundamentals of fencing, including scoring, striking and more. This activity will be taught by New York City’s Wheeling Forward, and professional instructor and Chilean national fencing team member, Anibal Alvear. You will be provided all the necessary equipment and instructions to discover this exciting sport.

Beep Baseball

New York City Department of Parks & Recreation

 

Beep Baseball was created to help those who are visually impaired enjoy the sport of baseball. NYC Parks and Rec will teach you the rules of the game and skills to help you play and then you will take part in a scrimmage with other activity participants – all while wearing a blindfold! This activity will be located at DeWitt Clinton Park – about a 15 minute walk from the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum.

Yoga – Get Your ‘Om’ On

Whether you are a seasoned yogi, or have always been interested in trying yoga, join in this all-levels yoga session and get your ‘om’ on. This community experience will introduce the fundamentals, breathing techniques, and proper alignment for you to be able to develop your practice.

Are you looking to fit in your workout for the day? Or need that push to jump-start a new fitness regimen? Join NYC’s own Instagram star, ST10 and Nike Trainer, and founder of Ocho System, Joe Holder, as he leads you through a 60-minute workout that will get your heart pumping. Joe will also share fitness tips and tricks that have helped him get to where he is today!
