Ali’s journey began 18 years ago when, while fulfilling his childhood dream of living in New York and finishing college, he developed a blood clot in his right lower leg. That blood clot led to 4 surgeries, extensive stays in 3 different hospitals, and having his right leg amputated below the knee. Despite this setback, Ali went back to work full-time less than 6 months later. As he dealt with shock, anxiety, and depression, Ali overcame all odds to provide hope to his patients in the same rehabilitation department he worked in prior to having is right leg amputated.
Almost 7 years after his amputation, he finally found a link to adaptive sports through the New York Rollin’ Knicks, a Division 1 wheelchair basketball team sponsored by the New York Knicks. Ali trained religiously for years and was voted onto the NWBA National All-Star wheelchair basketball team in 2012 and 2013. In 2014, Ali’s hard work and perseverance paid off, and the New York Rollin’ Knicks won the NWBA National Championship (Division 1) capping off an undefeated 42-0 season. The New York Rollin’ Knicks proudly won the NWBA National Championship again in 2018 after a 3 year hiatus of not winning the national tournament.
Ali’s proudest achievement is founding an adaptive sports and fitness program for physically disabled youth in upstate New York. His program Ali Adaptive Sports and Fitness provides consistent adaptive sport opportunities, mentorship, and grant assistance to physically disabled youth who unfortunately live in communities that do not have an adaptive sport outlet. Ali waited seven long (unnecessary) years to find a link to adaptive sports. He wants to make sure that the physically disabled youth of his community have an adaptive sport outlet so that they too can experience the hope, friendship, camaraderie, and fitness that adaptive sport provides.
Ali will be assisting with “Wheelchair Basketball” during Friday’s schedule of activities.
Ali embodies the No Barriers mission and through adaptive sports has unleashed the potential of his human spirit. His program Ali Adaptive Sports and Fitness is proudly leading the Paralympic movement in his community and beyond.
