A team of veterans from all eras and with a range of disabilities were selected to participate in an expedition to the Gila Wilderness of New Mexico. This expedition will provide a grueling yet rewarding mental and physical challenge to all the veteran participants, who have a desire to make a change in their life.
The expedition will take place in the spectacular canyons and vistas of the Gila Wilderness in New Mexico from October 2 – 10th. This nine-day expedition will include a team of twelve veterans, four No Barriers Leaders, and a photography team to capture the experience.
The expedition begins at the airport in El Paso, Texas where the team will be greeted by their expedition leaders and new teammates. The first day will be focused on preparing for the challenges ahead and building immediate bonds with fellow veterans. No Barriers provides all the gear and food needed for the expedition. The first days on the trail will be spent exploring the beautiful slot canyons of the Gila River navigating multiple river crossings. Over the course of seven days in the wilderness, the team will work together to navigate 31 miles through the backcountry maze, including a ascent of Hells Hole Canyon, exploring the Gila Cliff Dwellings, and a service day working with the Heart of the Gila Organization on a trail project.
Throughout the expedition, participants carry their personal gear and some group gear, and will bond with their cook group as they prepare backcountry culinary masterpieces at camp to fuel the next day’s mileage. Throughout the experience, leaders will be there to facilitate the No Barriers curriculum and remind the team that what’s within them is stronger than what’s in their way. After the expedition, alumni are welcomed into the No Barriers family for ongoing support from our community.
